Today's News:
----------------------------------------------------
Ron Maxwell, a gate controller at O'Hare (ORD), and Pat Lehman, a reservations representative in Honolulu (HNL), travel the world every year to race against their fellow airline employees.
Ron and Pat are among thousands of airline employees and retirees who gather for the World Airline Road Race (WARR), a weekend of running, networking and camaraderie in an exotic locale.
The next WARR event is scheduled for Hangzhou in the Yangtze River Delta in southeastern China , about 110 miles from Shanghai . The event isn't until September 10-15, but now is the time to plan for your travel and participation.
"Connecting with our fellow airline employees is the main draw," says Pat, who has participated in the races since 2002. "The runs are for fun, though we United people are competitive and put all we can into being a great team."
Airline employees, their family and friends – including a strong contingent from United – have participated in annual WARR activities sponsored by a different airline in a unique locale since 1981.
"These events are actually much more fun than marathons," says Ron, who is serving as captain of United's WARR team this year.
Ron, who has participated in the last two WARR weekends – in Sydney , Australia , and Ottawa , Canada – says the event provides participants with an opportunity to share best practices for performing their jobs with airline employees from around the world.
After social events, exhibits and sightseeing tours, activities center on a 5K and 10K races. With runners ranging in ages from 24 to 77, the races are organized according to age group.
Another popular feature is the best t-shirt competition. Each year, teams don specially designed t-shirts representing their airlines and then trade those shirts for those of other WARR participants.
